U.S. child porn smuggler jailed in Manitoba

November 3, 2009

A U.S. long-haul truck driver will spend a year in a Manitoba jail for smuggling child pornography into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency said Tuesday.

A U.S. long-haul truck driver will spend a year in a Manitoba jail for smuggling child pornography into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency said Tuesday.

Mark Andrew Krawczyk, 35, was given a 12-month sentence in court after pleading guilty to smuggling-related charges.

Krawczyk arrived at the border crossing at Emerson, Man., driving a commercial truck and trailer on April 15.

According to CBSA spokeswoman Lisa White, Krawczyk told border guards his truck was empty and he was picking up a load of goods in Canada and heading back to the eastern U.S.

White said border guards pulled Krawczyk over to verify he was eligible to be in Canada and to see if the truck was indeed empty.

During their inspection, White said guards found "numerous" compact discs containing images of child pornography.

Krawczyk faces deportation to the United States when he's released from jail.

White called the year-long jail term "one of the most significant penalties imposed for child pornography-related offences in Manitoba."

The CBSA did not reveal exactly what part of the U.S. Krawczyk is from. He has been in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre since his arrest
